William Merritt Chase was an American Impressionist, born in Williamsburg, Indiana, (Williamsburg is now known as Nineveh). When he was twelve, he and his family moved to Indianapolis where, in 1867, he began his training, with artists, Barton Stone Hays and Jacob Cox. Two years later, he went to New York and studied under Lemuel Wilmarth, at the National Academy of Design.
