Vincenzo Catena, also known as, Vincenzo di Biagio (c. 1480 – 1531)
Vincenzo Catena was an Italian artist of the Renaissance Venetian School. There are indications that he was born into a wealthy family and moved in humanist circles. The earliest known record of him is a mention, in an inscription on the back of a portrait painting by Giorgione, called “Laura”, painted in 1506 which suggested that the two of them may have entered into some form of partnership. Some of Catena’s early works displayed a lack of refinement but after the year 1510, he had developed a more mature approach due to the influences of, Giovanni Bellini and Titian, especially in the way that he learned to use, dispersion of light and warmer colours to great effect.
