Thomas Birch (1779 – 1851)

Thomas Birch was an English-born, American portrait and marine artist. Although, born in London, he moved to the US in 1794, where he helped his father, artist William Birch, to prepare his engraved views of Philadelphia and its surrounding suburban areas. These works were so successful, that they inspired similar engravings, depicting collected views of New York City. Thomas went on to paint portraits, up until 1807, then he changed direction and started painting marine subjects. Some of his most famous paintings portray naval battles of the War of 1812.
