Pietro da Cortona, real name, Pietro Berrettini (1596 – 1669)
Pietro da Cortona was an Italian architect and painter of the Baroque period. He was a leading figure of Baroque architecture in Rome, along with his eminent contemporaries, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Apart from his religious and allegorical canvases, Cortona was a prominent designer of interior decorations and is famous for his frescoed ceilings in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In Florence, he was commissioned to carry out extensive decorative designs by the Medici family. His birth name was Pietro Berrettini but he adopted the name of his hometown in Tuscany.
