Joos, or, Josse van Craesbeeck (c. 1605 – c. 1661)
Joos van Craesbeeck was a Flemish artist and baker from Neerlinter, now a village in modern day Belgium. He played an important part in the development of mid-17th century Flemish genre painting. His paintings depict figures ranging from the very poor, to the middle classes. He liked to paint characters engaged in churlish activities such as drinking, smoking and gambling. Craesbeeck was a pupil of Adriaen Brouwer, a genre artist who had a massive influence on his work. Brouwer taught Craesbeeck how to paint tronies (bizarre portraits of people with exaggerated facial expressions). In around 1633, Craesbeeck became a master baker and painter in Antwerp’s Guild of St Luke and later, he was a master in the painter’s guild in Brussels.
