Adriaen Brouwer (c. 1605 – 1638)
Adriaen Brouwer was a Flemish artist who worked in Flanders and the Dutch Republic during the early 17th century. He had a significant influence on genre painting (the depiction of ordinary folk in scenes of everyday life), due to his avant-garde approach. Brouwer painted exaggerated and expressive facial studies in his artworks, known as tronies, and included peasants and soldiers among his subject matter. He would portray them in a variety of situations including smoking and drinking and playing cards in taverns, sometimes, he would place them in pastoral settings. Brouwer began painting deep and tragic landscapes towards the end of his life.
