Joos van Cleve, or, Joos van der Beke (c. 1485 – c. 1540)
Joos van Cleve was a Netherlandish painter who is believed to have been born in Cleves in the lower Rhine region of north western Germany. In 1511, he entered the Antwerp guild as a master painter and in 1520, he became the dean of the guild. Due to his triptychs of “The Death of the Virgin”, he became known as, the “Master of the Death of the Virgin”. Some of Cleve’s works contain similarities with that of Leonardo da Vinci, suggesting that he may have visited Italy at some point. Joos van Cleve was the father of Cornelis van Cleve.
