Cornelis van Cleve, also spelled, Cleef, or, Cornelis van der Beke (1520 – after 1570
Cornelis van Cleve was a Flemish Renaissance artist, born in Antwerp. He is famous for his paintings, depicting religious subjects. It is believed that he was taught by his father, Joos van Cleve and worked for him in his studio. Later, Cornelis went to London to become a portrait artist but could not achieve success, this is thought to have driven him mad, earning him the nickname, sotte Cleve, (mad Cleve). It seems that very little of his work in England survived, if any. Eventually Cornelis was brought back to Antwerp and placed into the custody of his son-in-law but he never recovered.
