John Singleton Copley (1738 – 1815)
John Singleton Copley was an American artist, probably born in Boston, Massachusetts. He became very successful, painting the portraits of his wealthy clients in colonial New England whilst getting to know them well. In 1774, he moved to London where his success as a portrait artist would continue for the next twenty years. Apart from his portraiture, Copley ventured into the more highly regarded world of painting historical subjects and produced innovative works on large canvases. In later life, although still reasonably successful, his mental and physical health started to deteriorate and he became increasingly worried about mounting debts.
