Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699 – 1779)

Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin was a French artist from Paris. He is noted particularly, for his still-lifes and genre works which are beautifully balanced by his skilful use of light, colour and texture. Not much is known about his training but he did work with Pierre-Jacques Cazes and Noël-Nicolas Coypel for a while. Chardin often produced several versions of the same subject.

Pastels
In his later years and due to his failing eyesight, he changed from paint to pastels which he found easier on his eyes. His pastel portraits are very much admired today and most of them are housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Chardin worked very slowly and only completed around 200 artworks in his lifetime.
