Jan van Bijlert, full name, Jan Harmensz van Bijlert, or Bylert (1597/8 – 1671)

Jan van Bijlert was a Dutch Golden Age painter, born in Utrecht in the Netherlands. He travelled to France and then Italy where he spent most of his time in Rome, there, he met with fellow artists from the city of Utrecht. They all became hugely influenced by the work of Caravaggio and adopted many of his techniques. When they returned home, they collectively became known as the Utrecht Caravaggisti.
