Dirck van Baburen, birth name, Theodor Baburen (c. 1595 – 1624)
Dirck van Baburen was a Dutch artist, active in Utrecht and Rome and was one of the Utrecht Caravaggisti. He moved to Utrecht with his family when he was a boy and eventually became a pupil of Paulus Moreelse. After completing his training, he moved to Rome, where he collaborated with Dutch artist and colleague, David de Haen on the decoration of the Pietà Chapel in San Pietro, Montorio, Rome. On returning to Utrecht, he started genre painting, often featuring musicians and cardplayers.
Utrecht Caravaggisti or Utrecht Caravaggism refers to artists of the Baroque movement, most of whom, either came from, or studied in Utrecht and became greatly influenced by the work of Caravaggio while visiting Rome in the early 17th century. They took inspiration from the way Caravaggio used the contrast between light and dark (chiaroscuro), to such dramatic effect and they adopted a similar style. The Utrecht Caravaggisti mainly painted history scenes and genre settings.
