Giovanni Bilivert, or, Bijlivert (1585 – 1644)

Giovanni Bilivert was an Italian artist of the late Mannerism and early Baroque movements. After his father’s death in 1603, he began working in the studio of Cigoli and followed him to Rome where he worked on projects, approved by Pope Clement VIII. In 1611, Bilivert was employed by Cosimo II de’ Medici as a designer for works in the decorative art of pietra dura. There were several variations of his surname including Bilivelt and Biliverti.
