Cigoli, real name, Lodovico Cardi (1559 – 1613)

Cigoli was an Italian artist, architect and poet from Florence. He was born at Villa Castelvecchio in Cigoli, Tuscany which is where his more familiar name originated. He was trained in Florence by Alessandro Allori, an ardent mannerist painter. Lodovico went on to become the most prominent artist of his time in Florence. He eventually broke away from the Mannerist style and introduced Expressionism to his later works. He spent the last nine years of his life in Rome where he became an important 17th century figure.
