Frederic Edwin Church (1826 – 1900)

Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape artist from Hartford, Connecticut. He was a key figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painting and was known for his large canvases, portraying mountains, waterfalls, icebergs and volcanoes which he skilfully painted, combining realistic detail with the use of dramatic light. This technique allowed him to show the true beauty of the places he visited. Church was a very popular artist in his day and in his prime, was one of the most famous artists in the USA. His house named, Olana, is now a museum on the Hudson River, New York.
