François Clouet, also known as, Janet Clouet (c. 1510 – 1572)
François Clouet was a French Renaissance artist, born in the city of Tours, who became portrait painter to the French ruling classes. In 1540, he replaced his father, Jean Clouet as court painter to Francis I, a position that he held through the reigns of Henry II, Francis II and Charles IX. François also operated a large workshop where decorators, designers and miniaturists would carry out his various projects. Although he was an accomplished portrait artist, he also painted genre scenes and nudes. François and his father shared the nickname, “Janet” which caused constant confusion over which paintings belonged to which artist.
