Jean Clouet, nickname, Janet Clouet (c. 1485 – 1541)

Jean Clouet was a High Renaissance artist and miniaturist, possibly originating from the Low Countries (Netherlands, Flanders or Belgica) and his surname may well have been spelled, “Cloet”. Records show that in 1522, he was living in the French city of Tours and around that time, was appointed, “Groom of the Chamber”, by King Francis I, where he painted the portraits of the king and his household. In 1540, he was replaced from this post by his son, François Clouet. Jean and his son had the same nickname “Janet”, which was a problem when it came to attributing their work.
