Daniele Crespi (c. 1597 – 1630)
Daniele Crespi was an Italian Baroque artist from Milan. He was best known for his portraits, and religious works, painted with emotional, yet simplistic clarity. Although one of his teachers was Giulio Cesare Procaccini whose paintings were often powerful and dynamic, Crespi found greater inspiration from the works of Giovanni Battista Crespi, to whom he may have been related, this led Daniele to paint in a stark, realistic style, a style of painting endorsed by the Council of Trent. Unfortunately, Crespi died of the plague at a young age but in his lifetime, he did produce a large body of work.
