Giovanni Battista Crespi, also known as, Il Cerano (c. 1573 – 1632)
Giovanni Battista Crespi was an Italian painter, sculptor and architect from Cerano who was mainly active in Milan. In 1586, he went to Rome where he became friends with the Milanese cardinal, Federico Borromeo (nephew of St Charles Borromeo), who became his most important patron. After they returned to Milan together, Federico appointed Crespi, head of the Accademia Ambrosiana.
Crespi’s paintings are both complex and mystical, his crowded canvases and the angles he created suggest similarities to Mannerism, but they also display an emotional quality which is a characteristic of the Baroque style.
