Claudio Coello (1642 – 1693)
Claudio Coello was a Spanish artist of the late-Baroque movement. He was considered to be the last significant Spanish painter of the 17th century. Coello was born in Madrid and was the son of Faustino Coello, a famous Portuguese sculptor. Claudio worked on numerous churches and public buildings in Madrid, his most notable work being in the sacristy of the Escorial, which contains the portraits of many priests and courtiers. In 1684, he became a court painter to King Charles II. Coello was influenced by many masters, among them were, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, Diego Velázquez and Juan Carreño de Miranda.
