Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614 – 1685)
Juan Carreño de Miranda was a Spanish artist of the Baroque period. He was born into a noble family in Avilés, a town in the principality of Asturias. His father was also an artist of the same name. Carreño and his family moved to Madrid in 1623 where he trained as an artist, under, Pedro de las Cuevas and Bartolomé Román. In 1658, Carreño was hired as an assistant by royal appointment, to paint frescoes in the Alcázar of Madrid which were destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve, 1734. In 1671, Carreño became court painter where he painted several religious subjects, but was predominantly, a portrait painter.
