Cecilia Beaux (1855 – 1942)
Cecilia Beaux was a very successful American portrait artist who was noted for her appreciative works of American high society. At 16, she started art lessons in Philadelphia with her relative, Catherine Ann Drinker who was a distinguished artist and art teacher. After a year with Catherine, she started training with other artists, among them, Francis Adolf Van der Wielen. At the age of 32, she left her successful career behind and travelled to Paris to further her artistic skills and trained at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi where her work was assessed on a weekly basis by established masters, such as, Tony Robert-Fleury and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. In 1889, she returned to Philadelphia, where she began painting the portraits of the elite. She also painted members of her family, one of her more famous works, “The Last Days of Infancy” is a depiction of her sister and nephew. Cecilia Beaux was often compared to John Singer Sargent.
