Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837 – 1908)

Alfred Thompson Bricher was an American artist, associated with White Mountain Art (the painting of the white mountains of New Hampshire, USA). Bricher was one of the last painters of the acclaimed, Hudson River School. His work included landscapes and seascapes, painted in a luminist style. Towards the end of his life, luminism fell out of fashion and Modern Art became the principal, artistic movement. As his style of art faded, so did his fame.

Luminism is an American style of landscape painting that existed from the 1850s, through to the 1870s. It was a style, specifically used by the landscape painters of the Hudson River School. It involved the artist’s clever use of dramatic light effects within a painting, often combined with an elevated perspective. Luminist landscapes and seascapes, accentuate tranquility and calm.
