William Holbrook Beard (1824 – 1900)
William Holbrook Beard was an American artist whose whimsical paintings, often depicted animals carrying out human-like activities. He was born in Painesville, Ohio but moved to Germany to study at the Düsseldorf school of painting. In 1861, he returned to the United States, settling in New York City where he became a member of the prestigious, National Academy of Design. Beard showed a wonderful sense of satirical humour, using animals such as, bears and monkeys, to mock the human race.
