Vittorio Matteo Corcos (1859 – 1933)
Vittorio Matteo Corcos was an Italian artist, born in Livorno. He was known for his portraits of elegant young women, painted in leisurely poses. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under the tutelage of Enrico Pollastrini and in 1878, aged 19, he moved to Naples where he worked under Domenico Morelli, whom he greatly admired. In 1880, he travelled to Paris and managed to sign a contract with the Goupil Gallery, where he exhibited and sold his work. Corcos occasionally visited the studio of Léon Bonnat, a portrait painter to the upper and middle classes of Paris. Vittorio also produced illustrations for magazines which supplemented his income as a portrait artist. Between 1881 and 1886, he frequently exhibited his work at the Paris Salon.
