Trophime Bigot, also known as, the Candlelight Master (1579 – 1650)

Trophime Bigot was a French painter of the Baroque era, he was born in the city of Arles in Provence, where he began his career as an artist. In 1620, he moved to Italy and spent some time in Rome and in 1634, he returned to Arles, where he painted the alterpieces, “Saint Laurence Condemned to Torture” and “Assumption of the Virgin” for local churches there.
For a while it was thought that there might be two artists with the name, Trophime Bigot, one being known as, Maître à la chandelle (Candlelight Master) but it is now firmly believed that there was only one and that he adopted two different artistic styles, one to suit the Roman market and the other, to meet the demands of the Provençal market.
