Thomas Chambers (1808 – 1866 or after)

Thomas Chambers was an English born artist, from Whitby, Yorkshire. He moved to the US, where he spent most of his life, staying in New Orleans, New York City, Boston and Albany. He rarely signed his work which led to him being virtually unrecognised, until 1942, when a signed painting was discovered which linked him clearly, to a large number of bright, bold and colourful artworks consisting of marine subjects and landscapes. These paintings were exhibited in that same year. It was all far too late for Chambers, in around 1866, he moved back to England, penniless and disabled, he died in a workhouse.
