Thomas Baines, or, John Thomas Baines (1820 – 1875)

Thomas Baines was an English artist and explorer of British colonial southern Africa and Australia. When he was 22 years old, he left England and travelled to South Africa, where he worked as a scenic and portrait artist. In 1855 Baines joined a two-year, sponsored expedition across northern Australia, he was assigned the tasks of being the official artist and storekeeper. The objective of the expedition was to determine whether the northern area of Australia was suitable for colonial settlement.
