Théodore Chassériau (1819 – 1856)
Théodore Chassériau was a French Romantic artist and prolific draughtsman, born in El Limón, Samaná, (now, the Dominican Republic). In the early 1820s, Chassériau and his family moved to Paris, where he showed an advanced flair for drawing and was invited to enter the studio of the Neoclassical painter, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Later, Chassériau fell heavily under the spell of the Romanticist, Eugène Delacroix. It is said that Chassériau, attempted to unite the Romantic style of Delacroix with the Neoclassical approach of Ingres with considerable success. Chassériau was noted for his portraits, historical and religious subjects and Orientalist paintings, inspired by his travels to Algeria.
