Sébastien Bourdon (1616 – 1671)
Sébastien Bourdon was a French artist and engraver who was tutored in Paris. In 1636, although poverty stricken, he managed to get to Rome where he studied the works of various artists who greatly influenced him, they included Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain and Caravaggio. He would paint portraits of the middle-classes in the manner of Rubens and his landscapes and capricci of ruins, often in the style of Gaspard Dughet. Additionally, Bourdon painted mythological and genre scenes, (the depiction of ordinary people in everyday situations). Due to his large range of styles, he wasn’t instantly recognisable to his audience and this had a negative effect on their appreciation of him.
