Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, or, Lourens Alma-Tadema (1836 – 1912)
Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch artist with a special British Denizenship. He settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. He became a classical subject painter and was noted for his studies of the luxuries of the Roman Empire.
Denization
Denization was the granting to foreigners, rights, normally enjoyed only by British citizens, such as the right to own land. It was accomplished by a Monarch or head of state, publishing a legal document known as a “Letters patent”, which allowed for permanent residency. Denizenship no longer exists.
