Sebastiano Conca (1680 – 1764)

Sebastiano Conca was an Italian draughtsman and painter, born in Gaeta which was then, part of the Kingdom of Naples. He studied in Naples under the Italian artist, Francesco Solimena and in 1706, he moved to Rome with his brother, Giovanni, who acted as his assistant. Sebastiano became a celebrated artist throughout Europe gaining the patronage of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, who introduced him to Pope, Clement XI. Pope Clement commissioned him to paint frescoes in the Lateran buildings of San Clemente and San Giovanni. In 1725, Conca painted one of his most notable frescoes in the Basilica of St Cecilia in Trastevere, it is named, “The Coronation of St Cecilia”.
