Samuel Colman (1832 – 1920)
Samuel Colman was an American writer, interior designer and artist, famous for his landscapes of the early West. He was born in Portland, Maine but moved to New York City with his family while still a child, he may have been a pupil of the Hudson River School artist, Asher Durand for a short while. Some of the places he visited include Spain, Italy, France, England and the American West. In 1862, he was granted full membership of the National Academy and in 1866, he founded the American Water Color Society, becoming its first president. Colman should not be confused with the English artist of the same name.
