Robert Campin, or, The Master of Flémalle (c. 1375 – 1444)

Robert Campin there is a strong consensus of opinion that Robert Campin was, “The Master of Flémalle”, the first great master of Flemish and early Netherlandish painting. Campin’s identity and the attribution of paintings under the names, “Campin”, or, “The Master of Flémalle”, have been the subject of controversy for decades. Robert Campin was a highly successful artist during his lifetime which led to his activities being well documented but in spite of this, he never signed or dated his art, which means none of his work can be confidently connected to him.
