Richard Parkes Bonington (1802 – 1828)
Richard Parkes Bonington was an English landscape artist of the Romantic movement. Romanticism is defined by its emphasis on emotion and individualism. Bonington moved to France at the age of 14 and introduced an English quality and style to French art. After his untimely death, in 1828, at the age of 25, he became one of the most influential British artists of the time, gaining inspiration from the old masters, yet giving his work a contemporary twist. He showed remarkable skills in the handling of light and atmosphere, particularly in his many coastal landscapes, giving them large skies and low horizons.
