Pompeo Batoni, or, Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 – 1787)

Pompeo Batoni was an Italian artist, active in Rome, he painted many allegorical and mythological studies. Due to the high volume of foreign nobility who travelled throughout Europe on their fashionable, “Grand Tours” of the continent, Batoni decided to specialise in painting their portraits. Thanks, largely to his wealthy patrons, he gained international recognition for his work. He would often paint them with famous Italian landscapes as a backdrop.
