Pieter Claesz, also known as, Pieter Claesz van Haarlem (c. 1597 – buried 1661)

Pieter Claesz was a German born, Dutch artist who settled in Haarlem in 1617. He and the Haarlem born, Willem Claesz Heda, were the most prominent painters of still-lifes in their day and specialised in ontbijt, (Breakfast) pieces. They had very similar styles, both preferring to use a limited palette, almost monochromatic, enhanced by the subtle use of light and texture. After 1640, Pieter’s works became more colourful and decorative. Claesz’s son, Nicolaes Berchem, was a famous landscape artist.
