Philippe de Champaigne (1602 – 1674)
Philippe de Champaigne was a Belgian, Baroque painter, born in Brussels. He trained under the Flemish landscape artist, Jacques Fouquier. In 1621, he moved to Paris, where he worked with Nicolas Poussin, together, they decorated the Luxembourg Palace under the direction of Nicolas Duchesne. Later, Philippe became court painter for the Queen Mother, Marie de Medicis and then for King Louis XIII. During his career, Champaigne produced a large number of portraits of the French nobility, including royalty, high ranking members of the church and politicians. He also decorated many buildings, among them, the Palais Royal and the dome of the Sorbonne, both of which were projects, commissioned by the king’s chief minister, Cardinal Armand Richelieu. Champaigne is also noted for his religious works.
