Petrus Christus (1410/1420 – 1475/1476)
Petrus Christus was a Netherlandish painter, born in Baarle, near Antwerp. He was first documented as active in Bruges from the year, 1444. Christus was heavily influenced by the works of Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck and after van Eyck’s death in 1441, Christus became the most important artist in Bruges, until the arrival of Hans Memling in around 1465. Christus was noted for his innovative use of linear perspective and the placing of his sitters in detailed and colourful backdrops, rather than the dark backgrounds favoured by van Eyck and van der Weyden. It isn’t clear, exactly when Christus died but the city of Bruges records, show that he died in 1473, but, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he died in 1475 or 1476.
