Paul Jean Clays (1819 – 1900)
Paul Jean Clays was a Belgian artist, well known for his marine paintings. After spending time in Antwerp, he moved to Brussels where he became a prolific artist, painting scenes along the Scheldt. In 1868, he joined the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts which was an organisation formed by Belgian artists who were against Academicism and wanted to promote Realist painting and artistic freedom. Clays would display his works at many European exhibition halls, including the Paris Salon.
