Paul Bril (1554 – 1626)

Paul Bril was a Flemish artist and printmaker. Paul joined his older brother, Matthijs Bril, or Matthijs Bril the Younger (1550 – 1583) in Rome where they both spent most of their active careers. Paul was much admired for his paintings of Italian scenery in the Mannerist style, (Late Renaissance), he became a huge influence on landscape painting in both, Italy and Northern Europe. Meanwhile, Matthijs was enjoying his own success as an accomplished landscape artist. Sadly, Matthijs died at a young age, leaving uncompleted commissions which Paul went on to finish.
