Michiel van Coxcie (1499 – 1592)
Michiel van Coxcie was a Flemish artist, draughtsman, stained-glass window designer and Engraver who painted portraits and religious subjects. After living in Italy for 10 years, his work became visibly influenced by the Renaissance masters, including Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, this earned him the nickname, “the Flemish Raphael” among his admiring contemporaries. He was a favourite of Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain. Although Coxcie has become known as an imitator of the Italian style, he is still considered an important link between the Flemish Primitives and the Flemish Baroque, which includes Peter Paul Rubens.
