Michelangelo Cerquozzi (1602 – 1660)
Michelangelo Cerquozzi was an Italian artist of the Baroque period. He was well known for his paintings of battle scenes which led to his nickname, Michelangelo delle Battaglie, (Michelangelo of the Battles). He also painted mythological subjects, small religious works, still-lifes and genre scenes. Cerquozzi spent his entire career in Rome and became influenced by the “Bambocciante,” (a group of mostly, Flemish and Dutch, genre painters, active in Rome from around 1625, until the end of the 17th century).
