Mathieu Ignace van Brée, full name, Mattheus Ignatius van Brée (1773 – 1839)
Mathieu Ignace van Brée was a Belgian artist and sculptor, born in Antwerp. He was a founder member of the historical school of painting in Belgium and played an important role as a teacher in the development of 19th-century Belgian art. In his early career, he painted in a French neo-classical style, producing works, inspired by Antiquity. After the banishment of the French in 1813, he started painting scenes based on Dutch and Flemish history, adopting a Rubenesque manner. Van Brée often created large scale artworks that gained him high standing in his lifetime. He also painted colourful oil sketches on a smaller scale, and it is these, that are much admired today.
