Mather Brown (1761 – 1831)
Mather Brown was an American artist who resided in England. He painted portraits and historical works. In around 1788, he painted a full-length portrait of Prince Frederick Augustus, in the uniform of the Coldstream guards, now conserved by the National Trust at Waddesdon Manor near Aylesbury. Prince Frederick was the Duke of York and his title was later extended to include that of the Duke of Albany. The painting led to Brown’s appointment as History and Portrait Painter to the Prince.
