Ludolf Backhuysen, or, Bakhuizen (1630 – 1708)

Ludolf Backhuysen was a German-born, Dutch painter. He was also a draughtsman, calligrapher and printmaker. He became the most outstanding Dutch painter of maritime subjects, after Willem van de Velde the Elder, and Willem van de Velde the Younger, left for England in 1672. Backhuysen also painted portraits of his family and friends.
