Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472 – 1553)
Lucas Cranach the Elder was a German woodcutter, engraver, printmaker and artist of the Renaissance period who took his surname from his birthplace of Kronach. He was considered to be one of the most important and influential artists of German, 16th century art. He was best known for his portraits, religious subjects, mythological nudes and alterpieces. In 1505, Cranach became court painter to the electors of Saxony at Wittenberg where, among his subjects were German princes and leaders of the Protestant Reformation, he held this position until 1550. Cranach often painted many versions of his subject-matter and after his death, his son, Lucas Cranach the Younger continued to create versions of his father’s works.
