Louise Abbéma (1853 – 1927)

Louise Abbéma was a French artist, sculptress and designer of La Belle Époque. She painted in an impressionist style, using light and rapid brush strokes. She gained recognition for her work in her early 20s, after painting a portrait of contemporary actress, Sarah Bernhardt. Sarah and Louise were lifelong friends. Louise went on to paint portraits of other notable figures of the day, she was also renowned for painting panels and murals.

La Belle Époque translates as “The Beautiful Era”, and relates to a period in French and European history between 1871 and the start of World War I, in 1914. La Belle Époque was defined by optimism, regional peace and economic prosperity. This beautiful age of stability, provided the perfect platform for growth and innovation within the arts, sciences, architectural and industrial fields. It was a time when Europe is said to have reached its peak in global politics, establishing an influence throughout the world.
