Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761 – 1845)
Louis-Léopold Boilly was a French artist and draughtsman. He was a very popular portrait painter who also created a large number of genre subjects which accurately recorded French middle-class society. In 1778, he went to Arras where he was taught the art of trompe l’oeil painting by Dominique Doncre.
Trompe L’oeil is French for, “deceive the eye”. It is a fascinating art technique that gives an observer the impression that objects within a painting are three dimensional. This effect is greatly enhanced if the artist adopts the use of hyperrealism which will give the appearance of solidity and depth. Trompe l’oeil is often used to present the illusion that animals or people are climbing out of the painting and frame. See a superb example of trompe l'oeil below entitled, “Christ on the Cross”.
