Lorenzo Costa (c. 1460 – 1535)
Lorenzo Costa was an Italian artist, born in Ferrara. He probably started his artistic training under Cosmè Tura, a prominent Ferrarese artist. In around 1483, Costa went to Bologna, where he painted his famous Bentivoglio Alterpiece and other frescoes on the walls of the Bentivoglio Chapel which is situated in the Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore. While in Bologna, he met and became great friends with Francesco Francia, who introduced him to a softer, more atmospheric style of painting. In 1506, after the expulsion of the ruling, Bentivoglio family, Costa was summoned to Mantua, where he replaced Andrea Mantegna as court painter.
